Blaxhall's oldest resident, Peter Fletcher, died earlier this week at the age of 97, following several weeks of declining health. Peter's grandparents, Lawrence and Rachel moved to Blaxhall in 1883, with Peter's father, also Lawrence, being born here the following year. Lawrence, a bricklayer like his father, married Gertrude Philpot from Chediston in 1912 and they had Peter, their only child, in January 1914.
Peter married Iris Hewitt in 1950 and they both became very familiar figures in village circles over the following decades, until Iris' death in 1985. In more recent years he was a stalwart of carpet bowls at the village hall, a building he jointly reopened with Florrie Shaw after it's renovation in 2008. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Blaxhall Archive Group, providing much valuable input over the last 10 years. He will be much missed by all.
